WHAT IS GREEN COFFEE?
Green coffee, presented in the form of a food supplement, is actually an extract of coffee especially rich in chlorogenic acid from the seeds of the fruit of dried and unroasted coffee. Chlorogenic acid is standardized in the extract with values of around 50% according to the brands, higher than usual.
The most suitable starting varieties of coffee are Arabic or Robusta.
The caffeine in many products is eliminated or its proportion in the products commercialized is inferior to the one of the ordinary coffee, around 2%. In the description of the marks we have given an indication of their caffeine content obtained from the labeling of the different brands.
WHAT IS CHLOROGENIC ACID?
Under the name chlorogenic acid are grouped a number of related phenolic substances by its structure. Green coffee is an important source of phenolic acids that are well absorbed and metabolized in humans, producing a number of favorable physiological effects.
Other fruits that contain chlorogenic acid, but in smaller quantity are plum, apple or kiwi.
IS IT SUPPORTED BY SCIENTIFIC STUDIES?
Coffee and its main component, chlorogenic acid, have been positively evaluated in published clinical studies, due to their antioxidant effects, fat loss and glycemic control, cancer preventive effects, favorable effects on liver physiology, hypertension, among others. These are not extrapolated to conventional coffee, either expressed or in hot infusion form.
IS IT SUPPORTED BY CLINICAL STUDIES IN HUMANS?
Yes. The most mentioned was performed for 22 weeks in 16 adults, and two high-dose levels were titrated 1050 mg and low 700 mg of green coffee extract.
This study led by Joe Vinson of the University of Scranton (Pennsylvania), was published in January 2012 in the journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity. All 16 adults were considered overweight with a body mass index greater than 25. During this period they lost 10% of their body weight and 16% of body fat.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The extract of green coffee, by means of various physiological actions favorable for the loss of weight and fat, the main ones are:
– An appetite-reducing action: since chlorogenic acid would increase the intestinal secretion of the GLP1 neuropeptide. This substance is responsible for producing a feeling of satiety in the brain.
– Accelerates the metabolism of glucose, with a favorable action of thermogenesis, increasing our fat combustion. Chlorogenic acid inhibits the hydrolysis of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase (G6P) irreversibly.
– Reduces the absorption of glucose from the diet, in the intestines and its liver production.
– Green coffee has action on pancreatic lipase, which makes it difficult to absorb fat.
IS IT NECESSARY TO EXERCISE ?
Yes. In the main studies, the intake of green coffee is associated with a favorable diet and physical exercise. In any weight loss situation, it is wise to follow a proper diet and exercise regularly. Consult your physician.
WHAT LOSS OF WEIGHT CAN WE GET?
Although trademarks indicate higher losses, the most cautious opinions indicate a loss minimum of 2.5 kg in three months, varying according to the type of diet and exercise.
IS IT LIKE AFRICAN MANGO AND RASPBERRY CETONE?
No. The body mechanisms that regulate the accumulation of fat, depend on several factors. Raspberry Ketone and African mango have in common their stimulatory action of ADIPONECTIN. The Green Coffee has another mechanism of action.
WITH CAFFEINE OR NO CAFFEINE?
In some cases consumers notice that the product speeds them up a little, but in other cases they do not. The explanation is that some brands have chosen an extract of green coffee without caffeine, and others opt for a caffeine content. Although, always the caffeine content is usually lowered.
The presence of a certain amount of caffeine speeds up metabolism and elimination and can be favorable for its weight loss and volume effect. People with a fast, nervous pulse are better off looking for a decaffeinated alternative.
Products with Svetol® green coffee extract (Lamberts and Solgar) are decaffeinated. Also the Green Coffee liquid of Biocol. Other brands have caffeine, but in lesser amounts than a classic coffee extract.
There are also brands of green coffee associated with other plants, in some cases plants rich in caffeine, such as guarana.
COFFEE HAS THE SAME EFFECT?
No. Green coffee does not have the same physiological effects as cup coffee.
The infusion of coffee, espresso, American coffee, contain smaller amounts of chlorogenic acid. For this reason, it is safer to use it in the form of complements.
Green coffee is used instead of roasting because the roasting process improves the aroma, but components are lost.
Green coffee is not usually used, because it is more bitter than black coffee, and the aroma is much less intense because it has not been toasted.
WHAT OTHER EFFECTS DO GREEN COFFEE HAVE?
Anti-inflammatory: Green coffee contains a large amount and variety of polyphenols and flavonoids with slight anti-inflammatory ability.
Antioxidant: Green coffee polyphenols are a remarkable antioxidant and antiaging.
It contains melatonin and serotonin: Just for the sake of curiosity, green coffee contains melatonin, a human hormone related to sleep, and serotonin, a humor-related neurotransmitter, but they are in low concentrations, and their activity is irrelevant.
Decreased high blood pressure: Unlike the usual coffee in cup, rich in caffeine, which increases the tension, the extract of unroasted green coffee beans, if they do not contain caffeine, has scientifically demonstrated a physiological antihypertensive action, in doses lower than 200 mg.
These paradoxes sometimes occur with other plants. Green tea rich in teine and caffeine, also has a substance called L Theanine markedly relaxing character.
Chlorogenic acids in green coffee have antihypertensive capacity. Although green coffee decreases arterial hypertension, roasted coffee does not do so because the activity of chlorogenic acid is inhibited by the hydroxyquinone produced in roasted coffee. A part of the action of caffeine.
Homocysteine: Homocysteine, is a sulfur amino acid that is harmful to the body, whose negative effect is sometimes compared to cholesterol, and is found in blood. Elevated levels of homocysteine are correlated with heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, depression, schizophrenia, macular degeneration, cervical cancer, and birth defects. Green coffee would have a favorable physiological action against this substance present in the body.
According to one study, the ingestion of 140 mg of chlorogenic acid present in green coffee decreases the level of total homocysteine in plasma after 4 months.
Type II diabetes: It is interesting to note that in a clinical study with 56 human volunteers there was a marked improvement in green coffee consumption in type II diabetes. Also a decrease in the risk of suffering it.
Protection against neurological diseases: There has been a protective effect against Parkinson’s disease, and it is being studied against other diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
WHAT IS THE RIGHT DOSE?
The dosage recommended by the manufacturers is 200 to 400 mg, two or three times a day, taken with water and approximately half an hour before meals. That is, the recommended amounts range from 400 to 1,200 milligrams per day.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT?
They should not be used by children and pregnant women, or during lactation periods.
It is not convenient to use in patients with kidney disease.
Green coffee, rich in chlorogenic can have negative effects in people anemic or with difficulties of absorption of iron.
One of the main side effects of unroasted coffee beans is that they reduce the sugar absorption of carbohydrates. May interfere with oral antidiabetic medications. It is an aspect to take very into account. Talk to your doctor if you have a sugar problem diagnosed.
Being a food that may contain caffeine, the effects of heart rate acceleration should be taken into account. In people with heart disease should be controlled, even containing little caffeine. Its exciting effects should be taken into account in people with nervous or irritable disorders. Consult physician. Caffeine has unwanted action in cases of reflux and irritable bowel.
It can alter sleep. Do not take it from noon.
